What IS Yoga?

 

Yoga is a lot more than a physical practice, though that's a good place to begin.

Yoga for EVERY body

Yoga has been around for thousands of years, originating in ancient India as a practice to purify body, mind and spirit.  A series of physical poses (asana) was prescribed in conjunction with breathing techniques (pranayama) to build strength and still the mind in preparation for meditation through which one might - over time - reach samadhi.

The discipline was first brought to the West by Swami Vivekananda in the late 19th century, though did not enjoy broad appeal until later in the 20th century, mostly as a form of physical exercise.
  Today, yoga is experiencing a resurgence and is being recognized by scientists and health practitioners as a modality that can improve mental states and physical conditions over time if practiced mindfully.
